Where to purchase a small fruit tree of Mexicola Grande in San Jose/San Francisco Bay Area? Ive purchased a small Hass, 1and 1/2 yeras ago from Orange County, with no success so far. The leaves looked yellowish and branches look burned.... Just read an article that Mexicola Grande would be more appropriate for my home in the SF Bay Area.

Movement of citrus plant materials is also being restricted due to the invasion by the Asian Citrus Psyllid.

How large does a Fuju Persimmon get? Would it do alright in a side yard between houses. My house is in a standard suburban back yard and there is a 7 ft path between my house and the fence between my neighbor and I, there is also another 7 ft to their house on their side of the fence. If not a persimmon, can you tell me a small dwarf tree (preferably fruit) that could go there. I live in Lodi, CA., in the San Joaquin Valley Thank you for your help.

Please see the UC publication (pdf) Harvesting and Storing Your Home Orchard's Nut Crop: Almonds, Walnuts, Pecans, Pistachios, and Chestnuts. UC recommends that pistachios be stored in-shell. I hope this publication which is linked from the pistachio page is helpful to you. It does tell how to easily remove the hulls.

I planted a bare root Fuji apple tree on M27 root stock in Sunset zone 14 last February, so I havent seen a full annual growth cycle yet. The tree has adapted well, although I think that allowing it to bear 3 apples the first year kept it from growing as it should have. Now the branches have grown a kind of white fuzz all over them. My question is, is this a normal winter covering, or does it suggest a problem?

We have a Fuju Persimmon in our yard, we live in Lake Elsinore, Ca. On a No/East facing hill (totally 2600 ft high) we are up about 1500 ft. from the lake.

We have our tree protected from the winds but last year it didnt bloom. It bloomed the year prior (1st year after planting) I am thinking that we have it in too shaddy a place, shadded by a large peach from the western blazing sun in the aternoon, it gets total sun until 1pm and then doppled afternoon sun. Should we/can we move this tree if necessary now? We picked this place due to extreme winds.

Orange co. calif 3 miles from Beach. I have a single dwarf Satsuma that receives full sun. The tree is est 8 years old and has a large amount of fruit maturing on the main tree., About 3-4 years ago to two suckers advanced from about 1" above the soil and I have allowed them to harden and mature. The suckers are about 1.5 in daimeter and very vigorous. It does not appear that they have set any flowers. Question Is a dwarf Satsuma grafted? And if the suckers are below the graft will they produce fruit? If the original root system below the graft is a normal size Satsuma will the suckers overtake the tree? SHould they be removed? Thanks, ARt

I have found your site to be extrememly helpful. We are planting the first part of our home orchard (40 trees of plums, apples, cherries, peaches, nectarines, and apricots). I have used both your site and the Dave Wilson site which I found as a link from yours. It has helped me select and plan for many hopefully tastey varieties. We made a very quick decision to buy and plant trees this year and could not have done such an exciting job without your website and links. (I was working from an old Sunset Book with good info but none of the new exciting varieties) The trees are planted and we are now to the point of pruning the new trees. I am having some trouble sorting this out. Some of the trees are more mature than others. I have the references and books but some give varying information. I have called in a nursery consultant to help us with this stage so we are off to a good start. Thanks as I will continue to use the sight and hopefully take the Master Gardener class in the future!
